I've Almost Been Disowned

After one more great sleep over in the Journey with Taylor and Kierra, it was time to leave Ryan's driveway and re-set up in the campground at Camp Rilea Military Reservation.  Before we would get there, I needed to fill the propane tank.

The Astoria KOA is the handiest place to get the propane, they are set up for large RVs, unlike most of the gas stations that sell propane, I couldn't get the Journey in (or out) of them.

Of course it was pouring rain and high winds when I had to get the Journey ready to go.  I finally got everything set to go and we headed out, Marti just followed me in the Element instead of towing it.

The wind was really blowing, fortunately the Journey handles well in winds, but I could hear the slide topper on the driver's side blowing open a bit and then pulling shut when the spring tension overcame the wind pressure.  I kept a close eye on that because I was afraid that if it blew all the way open it could be really damaged.  Thankfully, it didn't.

We pulled in to the KOA and up to the propane tank located out front.  That's when we noticed a sign out front of the KOA reading: "RV Site Special $20".  That seemed to be to good to be true.

The propane tank took 17.1 gallons, the most I've ever put in that tank.  Can't complain, it lasted us almost 17 days.  The price was reasonable, $51, compared to the 9 gallons I bought back in Virginia that cost me $65.  :cO

I went into the KOA store to pay and asked them about the RV special, expecting it to be no hookups, or electric only.  "No", I was told, it was for even the 50 amp FHU site with cable and free WiFi.

Duh, this was a no brainer.  For the same price as Camp Rilea with no amenities, we got all the goodies at this KOA.  We canceled the Camp Rilea reservation and in no time were hooked up in a nice KOA site.  Minutes later, we were in the hot tub in their indoor pool complex.

Marti and I decided things like this are going to make our full time life quite enjoyable.

Tonight we met Ryan, Amber and the girls at a nearby Chinese restaurant for dinner.  Amber looked me in the eye and told me in no uncertain terms that my last post about her smoked pork shoulders was in serious error.  She told me she would never stoop so low as to use mesquite chips for smoking her pork, she uses only hickory chips.  She reminded me that I should never say she used mesquite chips and if I ever did it again, well, she is quite handy with that meat cleaver...

So tonight we're kicked back and enjoying the Astoria KOA while we wait for our mail package to arrive.  I'm thinking that hot tub is going to get some serious us by us, not a bad way to wait.

Thanks for visiting and feel free to leave a comment.

  1. Is that the KOA across the street from Fort Stevens State Park? That is an unbelievable deal. We looked at it last year and it was around $50+ for a FHU site. Enjoy those amenities - a nice soak in a hot tub doesn't sound too shabby. As for smoking the pork, just let the chips fall where they may (I wouldn't know the difference anyway lol).

  18. Don't just wave, stop and we'll be happy to buy you a pizza! Would love to meet you guys. Give me a call on my cell 541-870-0281, and we'd be glad to meet you over at Roaring Rapids Pizza. They have a big parking lot, so you won't have any trouble with your rig getting in and out. It's the first exit, after you cross that Willamette River bridge on I-5. You go right, and back over the freeway towards Springfield, turn right on Franklin Blvd, the after the first set of stop lights on Franklin you will see Roaring Rapids Pizza on the left side of the street. It sets way back by the river, and has a big parking lot past Camp Putt (which is out front.). O.K.??
