Life Happens

We’ve been busy doing our Water Safety Program a lot the last few weeks.  I’d post about it but how many pictures of kids with life jackets on and drowned oranges can readers stand?  Sometimes, life as a fulltimer is just what it is…life.  Lather, rinse, repeat.

One recent event we’re dealing with is our onboard Splendide washer/dryer has bit the dust.  Expensive dust.  I spent some time with a tech on the phone and it is going to cost big bucks to repair, not to mention the cost of the parts to repair it.  The tech said the average life span of the w/d for fulltimers is 5 to 8 years.  Well we’re at the 8 year mark, even though we’ve only been FT for about 3 1/2 years, the w/d did get lots of use the years before we went FT.

Cost wise, it is cheaper to replace the unit with a new, larger capacity unit than to repair this one and have another component fail down the road.

I’d dabble with a repair if it wasn’t so hard to get the w/d in and out where it’s located in the Journey.  It is going to be a couple of hour job for two men just to get it out and the similar time to install the new one, so I only want to do this one time.

I found a brand new unit on sale at PPL Motorhomes in Texas for several hundred dollars cheaper than anywhere else (including shipping), so I bought one.

Hopefully we’ll see it by then end of the week before I run out of clean skivvies!  :c)

Thanks for visiting and feel free to leave a comment.

  1. I hope you'll document the removal and reinstall. Our Splendide is 10 years old and I just know that one day it's going to die. I doubt it's something we'll attempt to do ourselves but never say never. I'll be curious to see how yours comes out.

    1. Yep, looks like we'll be joining the queue to snag a washer until our new one arrives. ;c)

  4. I think ours is the original so its over 10 years old and I know it can go out any day. I like PPL. I know what you mean about removing them.
We had a leak and it was a bear.

Did you know you can get much longer life out of your skivies, if you just turn them inside out.:)

  5. We have the spot and hook ups for a W/D but never wanted the weight or the need for numerous small loads. We've managed to find W/Ds in many of the campgrounds we go to and that's easier for us. Hope your uninstall and reinstall works out easily and perfectly.

  6. If you're skivvies get dirty, just turn them wrong side out.

Sorry to hear about the W/D. It seems we're all hitting more repairs lately than we did a few years ago. I wish they'd write the problems in chalk and we could erase it instead of letting it get to the pocket book. .

  7. You should never have to run out of skivvies, you still have a sink-right:)

  8. Our washer just went out and got it replaced in about 2 hours. Of course had to drive 2 hrs there and back, but at least they had it in stock. Crisis averted. :)

  9. When my first Splendide went out, it was covered under the extended warranty. That warranty ends in May. I'm crossing my fingers. If laundry facilities are provided at the refuges where I go, I try to use them to extend the life of my unit a bit. I'll see how that works out in the long run.

I hear you about same old same old. You do oranges, I do VC.

  12. Life does go on and sometimes with only an occasional break in the routine. Good luck with the washer replace. We just use laundromats and get it all done in an hour and a half. That works best for us.
