A Disney Ding And Off To Key West

There are all kinds of souvenirs one can get at Disney World.  I got a unique one that I wish I had been able to pass on.

The kids and grands had left, we had one extra day to catch our breath and then we pulled out to head to Key West.  I was pulling out of a really tight spot from the Fort Wilderness campground loop, being very careful not to hit a tree on my left and inching past a fence on the right, watching the side of the Journey.  I knew I cleared everything.  As I straightened out on the road I saw in my mirror something fly out from the side of the motorhome and land on the road.  I stopped and walked back and picked up this:

It was the cover to the water heater.  It must have gotten caught on a nail sticking out of the fence that I couldn't see as I inched by.  It was a miracle that there was no contact to the fiberglass side of the Journey.

Not much I can do to straighten it out, but until I can order a new one, it will still work to keep the bugs out of the water heater.

We took two days to leisurely drive down to Key West.  We enjoyed the views and the clear blue water.

We pulled in to the campground on Key West.  Right on Key West the Navy runs a campground for active, reserve and retired military and DOD civilians.  Right on Key West.  Sweet!

There is a rotation system in place based on a two week schedule.  You go to the dry camping area for two weeks and then rotate into the FHU's for two weeks.  If you stay long enough, you then rotate back to dry camping and so on.  Many people here stay the whole winter.  You see some solar panels and lots of little generators to supply power during generator hours.  We used our on board genny quite a bit to cool the Journey down for the night non generator hours.

We brought with us our "Tadpoles", our two Honda 50cc scooters.  We had a great time buzzing around downtown Key West.

We sampled some great food and fun coconut filled punch drinks.

Lots of chickens running around waiting to scarf up any crumbs you might drop from you meals.

As you walk around downtown Key West, you never know who you might meet up with.

Lots of stores selling a variety of trinkets and souvenirs, and one very dangerous store.  Beware!

There are all kinds of RVs here, big and small, fancy and plain.  Even tents.  Why do people flock here?  Maybe for some of these views.

Not too shabby!

Tomorrow we have to "pull chocks" and start our way up to home base.  We have a pretty long driving day ahead, around 275 miles to an RV resort for a two day stay...with full hook ups.  Good thing, I'm almost out of clean skivvies!  :cD

  1. It's a good thing it was the Heater cover and not a body part against that nail.
Those Sunrises and Sunsets are so hard to take down in the Keys.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

  3. Bummer about your cover but a minor inconvenience compared to what can happen pulling out of tight sites. Looks like a wonderful time in Key West.

  6. Ugh! I hate dings. We've seen several around here but usually it's not the driver who damages his own RV! I can think of many places those little tadpoles would come in handy.

  7. I remember how tight is was to get into and out of our site at Fort wilderness. It could have much worse.

We had a great time at the Navy Base campground in Key West. I think I liked parking in the overflow grass better than the FHU sites.

  9. I've missed the travelogues, good to see you on the road. Of course that little water heater problem could put a damper on things. Sail on!
