Riders On The Storm

Yes, that song by the Doors was going through my head as Marti and I rode out Hurricane Irene in the Journey.  We pulled in to the parking lot of Marti's nursing home Friday night, fired up the Onan 8 KW generator and set in for the blow.  With the potential threat of problems and Marti being responsible for 120 residents and an equal number of staff, we thought it would be best to be close by.

Fortunately, all we experienced was some heavy rain and gusty winds.  We made periodic rounds in and around the building to ensure all was well.  We were able to keep close tabs on the storm via our rooftop satellite dome and DirecTV, as well as the Internet with our Sprint aircard and we had a gourmet meal in the crock pot.  We were really suffering.

During the heaviest winds, I brought in one of the two opposing living rooms slides on the windward side to protect the slide topper awning.  That was the extent of our difficulties.  Now it is Sunday morning, a nice light breeze is blowing and the skies are blue with nice white puffy clouds.  Later this afternoon we'll be pulling up the jacks and heading back to the storage lot, putting our escape pod away until the next trip. :c(

It is a blessing to have the Journey to use in an emergency.  Hopefully, the next time a hurricane comes through, we'll be on the road a little more inland, like Kansas!  :c)

  1. I'm so glad you two are ok. What a scary time in a MH. We're in Chicago area, don't think there will be hurricanes here for your next time.

  3. Glad to see the Journey handled the storm like a real trooper and you guys are safe and sound. We have just returned home to batten down the hatches and await Irene s arrival tonight . The Tropical sits in standby mode in the driveway.

  6. What a perfect use for your motorhome! I love that old Doors song, too. By the way, have you ever seen all the RV'rs come to the rescue in Independence Day? One of my favorite scenes in that movie, which was kitchy but still fun. By the way, thanks for following along on the MoHoTravels!

  7. Glad your workcamping is over ;o)) We were worried about you two!!

The day after a hurricane the weather is always so beautiful...

Now let's get these houses sold so we can just run away when the next big hurricane comes this way:o))

  8. Hope that house gets sold and you can shelter here at Dogpound North next time. Even the hurricanes can't find us!

  9. Glad to hear Irene was kind to you two. Hopefully the east coast can rest easy now that they've gotten the earthquake and the hurricane out of the way.

But Kansas for next time? Really? Tornados.....wicked witch of the west....ruby slippers. You dont' want to be there. Do you???

  11. So glad to hear you guys are safe and that the storm didn't do any damage. But I must admit - Kansas would not be my place to run to. At least hurricanes give you some warning - tornadoes don't.

  13. I thought about you and wondered how you were doing. Sounds like you found a good place to hide without too much suffering. We've had to pull our slides a few times when the strong winds hit the Arizona desert. It's certainly better to be a little preventive than have to deal with the situation if we aren't.

  15. Ah, I see you have a yearning to visit Dorothy, do you? All kidding aside, good to hear all went well during Irene's visit to the Old Dominion.
