Remedial Bird Identification

I have to confess, I really had no idea what kind of bird this was:

Luckily, for me, I had many friends who quickly pointed out that it is a “Gamecock”, the official mascot of the University of South Carolina.  What do I know?  I’m a D*** Yankee.

I ran across another bird, see if all you brilliant birders can identify it.

Don’t know?  It’s a “PengOwen”!

Yep, Owie (Owen) was in costume for his school’s circus.

They had popcorn vendors,

Ringmasters,

Weight lifters,

Dancers,

Even a Lion Tamer, who stuck his head in a lion’s mouth!

Of course, they had to have clowns!

But we were looking for the special act, Marti, Andrew and Heather kept their eyes “ripped”…(an Owie term, to keep a sharp lookout).

Finally, the Penguins!

Owie looked great in his costume.  He peered out of his mask to make sure we were watching.

He did tricks, including “sliding” on his stomach like real penguins do.

He was quite a performer and drew great laughs from the audience.

We may not be traveling right now, but we’re still having  great adventures with our grandsons, whether it’s watching them perform in a circus, or teaching them how to fix their daddy’s lawnmower.

  2. And here I thought it was an orange-footed, white-bellied grandsonian tweeter! But then what do I know? I'm a Yankee too...

  3. That Judy, she really can identify those birds. Bet that's a new one on her life list.

That's a mighty creative circus there. I'll bet the kids had a great time doing it. But who made all those great costumes??

You sure aren't lacking for entertainment.

    1. Marti and Heather made Owie's costume. All the school kid's parents made their costume, too.

  4. That's the one thing I'd be concerned about if I was a full-timer; missing my grandkids. They change and grow up so fast, and I wouldn't want to miss any of the milestones.

  5. Love the PengOwen...much cuter than the Gamecock:o))

It's never too soon to teach the grandsons how to do engine repair;o))

  6. How fun was that!! Took a lot of work to put that circus on. And the costume is so cute. I love penguins.

  7. Owen's Peng-Owen suit was pretty cool. It was nice that he got to show everyone a few tricks as well.

It must have killed you not to join that 'clown parade'!

  8. Yup, it's the grandkid thing that tears our hearts. Therefore, within 2 months it's back to the Northeast for a spell.

Listen to that Judy. She really knows her birds.

  9. There you go. You found something right down your alley. It seems that circus sure caught the eyes of your little ones ... and you too. What fun!

  11. Too, too cute! I'm impressed with all the good seamstresses in that school!

  12. With those red eyes and yellow fringes, I'm going to take the PengOwen identification a step further and say he's of the Macaroni species, which got its name from British dandies of old who used to dye their hair like that ;-)

  13. Just hysterical! My favorite (next to the PengOwen, of course) is the strong man. What an elaborate production!
