A Special Surprise For The Boys

We always enjoy our time with all our grandkids and hope they remember our time together.  Sometimes we find a way to create a special memory by doing something unusual.

We set out from our campsite in Myrtle Beach and headed North, telling the boys we had a big surprise for them.  We stopped in for a just made hot doughnut at Krispy Kreme.

They’d never had one before and quickly wolfed them down.  I guess you could say we were contributing to the delinquency of minors. ;c)

But that wasn’t the big surprise.

We stopped at a park that had some old Air Force planes on display.   We walked around them and looked at them.  The boys loved it and had a million questions.

But that wasn’t the big surprise.

We drove a little further and FINALLY got to the big surprise.

We took the boys for a ride in a helicopter (with their parent’s permission).  They’d never been (neither had Marti) and whooped with excitement.  We had to split up because the helicopters were small and could not take all four of us at the same time, so Andrew and I went riding in the grey helo and Marti and Owie rode the yellow helo.

Andrew sat right up front next to the pilot, what a view!

Owie sat in back with Marti, he loved it, too.

It was really cool to be able to have a special surprise for the boys, they’ll always remember their first helicopter ride.  They said this was the next best thing to Splash Mountain at Disney World.

I guess we need to make a return trip to the Magic Kingdom one of the days (soon!).

Thanks for visiting and feel free to leave a comment.

  1. I've probably been on a thousand airplanes but never been on a helicopter either. I'd like to go up in one of those and also a hot air balloon. I wish you'd take me. Maybe in my next life I'll come back as your grandchild ???

  3. I don't know which I'd enjoy more - the hot Krispy Kreme donuts or the helicopter ride! ;-) You're certainly loving grandparents - wanna "adopt" me?

I've ridden in a helicopter once, over Niagara Falls. Back then I was immortal.

  8. A very special treat indeed. I'm willing to give choppers another try ... the first time, I did OK while in the air ... but wasn't feeling too great by the time we got back to the hotel.

  10. So, you take your Grandsons up in a helicopter? Your setting the bar pretty high Paul. I guess I'll have to take my little guy Mason up in a space shuttle to top you now! What a great surprise - well done!

  11. I read on with much anticipation thinking about what the surprise might be. Never would have guessed helicopter rides. Wow. We are visiting our three grandsons who are similar in age, so I can imagine how excited they were. You did set the bar a litte high, but how fun and memorable!

  15. Even without the helicopter ride, there's no way those boys will ever forget their time with you both. You have to be the best grandparents in the world! You're right about the helicopter, though. I remember when our father sent Diana and I up in one, long, long ago.
