Man Plans, God Laughs

That’s what our daughter Heather said when I gave her the news.  Our plans to go out West for several months after the New Year have been shot down in smoke.

Once again I’m in need of eye surgery, after all the fun I had over the last two years with a cataract in my right eye which ended up needed two additional surgeries for a detached retina, I’ve now had a diagnosis of a cataract in my left eye.

The earliest I could get a required pre-surgery appointment at the VA hospital is 29 January 2015, with the actual surgery and follow up appointments yet to be determined.  So we have to stay around the South East Coast area.  When we informed the rangers here at the COE that we need to stay around longer, they were quite pleased.  We’re happy to have a place to stay neat the VA hospital, so that’s worked out well.

Fortunately this won’t impact our Disney cruise we booked for the first week of January.  After we get some surgery dates, we plan to take a vacation of sorts and spent two or three weeks in Florida.  So all you RV friends of our’s wintering in Florida, please save some of that sun and warmth for us.

We also are going to use the time in Florida to change our residency from South Dakota to Florida.  Since our mailing service in Sioux Falls had moved a couple of blocks down the street and we have to put in address changes, we decided to change to Florida where we’ll save hundreds of dollars in the Journey’s registration fees.  Diesel and gas may be much cheaper now, but with the savings, we’ll be able to keep some of that savings in the wallet instead of putting it in the fuel tanks.  (Plus we can get some great Florida resident discounts at Disney World).

We anticipate remaining at the COE through April, and possibly into May 2015 to get all the cataract surgery and follow up appointments behind us.  We’ll see where we go from there, don’t want to cause anymore heavenly laughter.  ;c)

One more thing, a late Veterans Day comment from a proud dad, a picture of my son Ryan, who is a Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer and our DIL Amber, at a dinner last Friday night for newly promoted Coasties.  He is the real deal, not a “Poser”.  :c)

  1. You have every reason to be proud of your son and his wife. I just got out my eraser and erased all those plans we had worked out together. However, those eyes have got to have top priority so you're forgiven ... this time.

  2. I am actually pretty envious of your surgery. My cataracts are bad enough to impair my vision but not bad enough for removal. I still can't figure that out. Glad to hear we will be neighbors there in Crestview.

  3. Good that you can hang at the COE while you get things taken care of. Seems like South Dakota is going to be sorry for losing a lot of residents!

  5. We will be thrilled to welcome you to the Crestview Condo Association!!! We'll have to have a pool party one of these days ;o)) Let us know when and where you are when you get to Florida.

Sorry that your plans must be put on hold. However, the West will still be there once your eye is taken care of. Hope the surgery goes smoothly since you have had lots of practice!!

Thanks to you and your son for your service... You should be VERY proud!!!!

  6. We are also Crestview residents. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Sorry your plans had to change yet again, but maybe this time the cataract surgery will be a breeze and you'll be free to travel where you like.

Congrats to your son. What a good looking couple they are.

  7. So sorry to hear we won't be seeing you this winter. But life throws us curves and we have to be flexible enough to catch them. I think it's great that you have a place where you can stay and keep yourself occupied while all this is going on. Enjoy your cruise.

  8. Crestview Florida is experiencing a population explosion! We like it here too. Don't forget the senior discounts at the Fl State Park campgrounds.
Hope things go smoothly with your eye. Nice to have a good place to stay while waiting.

  12. That's disappointing news for you I'm sure but health issues have to take priority over everything else.

Great pic of your son and daughter-in-law.

  13. So sorry to hear of the required surgery, but you are fortunate to be in a location close to the surgery.
The West will wait. Of course, you might be forced to come out here if we are ever to meet up again. LOL
Nice picture of your son and his wife.

  16. Well I guess we'll have to change our plans now, sounds like there won't be room for us there at Thurmond. ;-)) We've definitely been enjoying "that sun and warmth" you mentioned. We'll try to save some for you. ;-)

  17. That's a shame ... hopefully the surgery will follow soon after the required pre-surgery appointment, and you can find your way west.

  18. Hopefully the VA will get their act together so you can get the surgery soon. Just saw a segment on the new VA Director who is trying to get things turned around. He's got a tall order there.

  19. I have been following your blog for a few years and always enjoy your posts. I am sorry for your health issues but it is best to get those done now. I retire in April and will be heading west to start our adventure. I really hope we can run into you before that. We have started our own blog to document our adventures. We gave it a try on our vacation last month to NY and NH and will continue it when we leave for Key West Christmas day. Follow along if you would like. www.whererthemontgomerys.blogspot.com

  20. Best regards to the new Chief. I would say congrats but that permanent cuttermans pin says he no doubt earned it. Sorry but glad about the eye being fixable and you getting in pretty quickly.

If you do manage to get west of the Missouri, be sure to drop a line so we can share a glass or 2.

  22. Sorry to hear of the upcoming eye surgery, but I'm sure you'll enjoy the west more if you can see it clearly! Didn't realize we already knew so many of our neighbors in Crestview. We're waiting on documentation on one vehicle to complete our Florida residency process. Welcome to the neighborhood! Currently near Jacksonville, FL
