Grounded

We’ve been sitting here at our South Carolina “home” since 1 December (an new record for us) and were looking to roll out in February for warmer destinations in Florida.  We were staying longer to get our medical check ups and eye appointments out of the way.

Yesterday, I had a visit to the Veterans Administration Hospital (VA) for an eye exam.  Seems my prescription needed an update as my right eye was a little blurry.

A new set of glasses was not in the cards, I have an early onset cataract in the eye.  This is not what we expected.

Now we’re going to have to stay here longer.  The VA will schedule me an appointment with an ophthalmologist to have them re-check the eye and then after that schedule surgery.  Not a big deal, except that it takes weeks to get appointments.  I had to wait over a month for this one.

The one drawback with the VA is you have no control over appointments, they schedule them for you and you have no input as to when.  If we took off now for Key West, with my luck, I’d get an appointment as soon as we arrived and would have to high tail it back.  So, for now it’s the smarter thing to remain in place and wait until all the eye issues are resolved.

I’m  glad that it will be taken care of at no cost to me, so I’ve got no room to complain.  Plus, there are many more geocaches to find so we’ll have more time with our grandsons.  That’s always a good thing  :c)

Thanks for visiting and feel free to leave a comment.

  1. Gee, we are in the same boat, but mine is not "ripe" enough. You need to learn computer hacking...then you could schedule your own appointments. ... Not....

  2. Bummer about the eye. I can truly empathize with waiting to get a surgery appointment. Good luck!

  3. We sympathize. All of your waiting around and medical appointments are reminiscent of our time last spring/summer. :-(

  4. I have very (very) slight cataracts in my eyes. Wishing for a bit more so I can get both done while I'm still on the insurance :) Hope that your appointment doesn't take too long to get!

  5. Sometimes it takes a while before those pesky cataracts are ready... but you'll be happy with your "new and improved" eyesight when it's done. Yes... getting an appointment for anything is a pain in the butt!

  6. Hope the VA doesn't take too much time getting your eye taken care of. I guess waiting around is the price you have to pay for such wonderful insurance. Can't complain about that too much. The wait will be worth it in much improved eye sight.

  7. I hope you get the surgery quickly and can head down to Florida. We've been wanting to meet you.

You certainly could be in a worse location, and I'm sure the boys are happy for you to stay.

  8. You could put a patch on your bad eye and go to Florida as a Pirate! I guess you'd still have to go back for the cataract surgery so that wouldn't work.

Cataract surgery is supposed to be pretty remarkable from what I've heard.

  9. Sorry you can't get moving. But perhaps, after your first year of travel, you really were meant to sit tight for a bit!!! Get all the medical stuff done, all the geocaches found and then you'll be ready to set out on new adventures:o))

  10. Being in South Carolina isn't really bad and most of the winter is over .... hopefully, that is. Besides I bet there are a couple little boys around who are celebrating now that you're hanging around.

  11. So sorry to hear you are grounded and waiting but sure wish I could get new eye sight like those cataract surgeries give. I've got a "slight" one but it's "not operable". Messes up my vision a lot in my opinion but apparently not in theirs. Oh well, the boys will think your stay is great! I'll just hope for warm weather for South Carolina.

  12. Sorry to hear about the cataract ... better to find out now while you are there than after you had left. My mom had the surgery a few years ago and said the difference was like night and day. Keeping fingers crossed the appointments happen sooner rather than later.

  13. We understand about waiting in one place for medical issues. It's the darn medical appointments they keep finding things :-)

  14. I thought early onset meant they weren't operable yet. Hope they don't make you wait too long.

  15. No fun a'tall!! You have my sympathy. Seems we have spent the last two months getting all the medical and dental stuff taken care of. Every doc we go to seems to find something else that another doc needs to look at. BAH-HUMBUG!! Hope you get your appointment soon so you can get back to your travels.
