A Peak at a Military Campground

Military folks have a nationwide network of campgrounds, on or close to many military bases.  They are open to active duty, reserve, retired military and in many cases Department of Defense civilian employees.  Sometimes, by special permission of the base commander, organizations like the Boy Scouts are also able to use the campgrounds.

The campgrounds are managed by the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) divisions of the military base.  You'll find MWR offices on most bases where they also rent out recreational gear like boats, tents, pop-ups and small travel trailers, bikes, and other sports gear.

Like many commercial campgrounds, military campgrounds come in all sizes, shapes and varieties.  Some are outstanding, almost works of art, others are pretty run down and in need of some serious TLC.  The bottom line is these campgrounds offer military folks (who don't make a lot of money compared to civilian counterparts) a chance to get out and enjoy the great outdoors, with a pop-up or a trailer that they rent from the MWR office.

The military campground I have pictures of is located just outside of Yorktown, VA on the U.S. Navy's Cheatham Annex.  It is a middle of the road campground with one huge plus...it is located just down the road from Busch Gardens amusement park and is close to the Yorktown Battlefield National Park, Williamsburg and Jamestown, VA.  Hot tourist spots, for sure.

                                       The campground sign.

Some of the larger sites on one circular road, semi shady, where even a very large RV can park.

In the middle of the large RV site circle is a nice playground area for the kids (or grandkids).

The large sites are all back ins with a concrete pad and a gravel drive for the toad or tow vehicle.

There is a second circle for smaller RV's, with a great view of the York River.

A bathhouse is right in the middle of the campground, it is small, but clean and neat.

The bath house has a washer and dryer.

Right on the other side of the campground road is this:

It's the base golf course! There are cart rentals and a small pro shop.

The daily price for FHU site with 30/50 amp power is $20 per night, $120 per week or $450 a night. It is quiet, secure and the local neighbors are deer. Gee, I guess that's where they got the name of the golf course from! ;c)

Thanks for visiting and please feel free to leave a comment.
