Facebook Connection

We may be in Oregon, or Texas, or Florida or in the middle of the Arizona desert, but Marti faithfully checks her Facebook page. She gets lots of enjoyment keeping in touch with her friends, old and new and reading what they're doing.

Me? I'm not too interested in Facebook. Marti briefs me on common friends sometimes, but for the most part, I ignore it. I also don't have a Facebook page, my mug is ugly enough without plastering it all over the internet every day.

So while we were in Myrtle Beach, Marti's Facebook addiction, er, interest, netted a major score for me.

My old partner, Ron, who I worked with for years during my investigative career, is not to embarrassed to have a Facebook page. To make things even better, he posted that he was in Myrtle Beach chillin' while his wife was touring a local college with their daughter. Huh? He's in Myrtle Beach and I'm in Myrtle Beach! I had to call him right away.

That call resulted in a great visit together for several hours to catch up on each other's life. It was great to see him, he now lives in Florida and I have not seen him for over a year. A great visit, it t'was.

Lest you think we didn’t have any fun in Myrtle Beach, we did and actually visited the beach.  Beaches don’t have a whole lot of mysterious draw for us, one time in my Coast Guard career, we lived 150 yards from the beach for eleven years.  We still have salt water in certain places in our bodies from all that salt water swimming.

But swim we did, the water was wonderfully warm and…wet!  A picture to prove we really were there.

As for the campground we stayed at, Pirateland, it had the “ICK” factor, not a place we’ll return to.  It was really crowded, if I put my hand on the back of the Journey I could reach out and touch three others.  But the tight spaces didn’t stop people from walking through our site, or bicycling through our site, or for an all time first experience, driving a golf cart (!!!) through our site.

In fairness, it appears that the campground is a family reunion/vacation place.  Many families in multiple trailers next to each other were all around.  Plus, it was really nice to be close to the beach.  But those pictures Sherry posts of deserted beaches where she and David are staying are much more inviting.

Of course, we’re making another one of our mad dashes, this time to New Jersey to see these beautiful beach babies, Anabelle and her mom, Amanda.

And next weekend, we get to meet Rebekah for the first time.  Here is the little one with her big sister, Taylor.

  3. Isn't it great that with today's communication capabilities you were able to touch base with an old friend. This is the life and it's good.

  4. I'm not a facebook person either. I can't figure out why I should have facebook when I have you on Blogger!! Funny thing you mentioned all those tight campgrounds and rude people. We were talking about the same thing tonight with some RVing friends. We don't like that either.

  5. That's great that you were able to meet up with your old partner, Ron. I still can't get Terri on Facebook. Maybe one of these days she'll give in. :)
    Have fun with the grandkids!!!

  7. Can't keep up with blogger so won't be adding blogger;o)

While none of the commercial parks in Myrtle Beach are a place I want to stay, they really aren't bad in the off season. We're at Myrtle Beach State Park and it is packed also. Just two more months and we will like being here again;o(((

  8. Facebook does have its benefits; but the meaningless posts keep me away.

  9. As Marti knows, I am on Facebook. Did it initially to keep up with my younger son ;-) Have found lots of friends through FB, and keep up with family who don't read the blog :) George is on it too, but never posts a thing!

  10. I too have gone over to the "dark side" (facebook). My wife doesn't have a facebook account, but certainly doesn't mind looking at mine!
I just block anyone who posts drivel, even though they may never know it. Sometimes it's nice to see cousins and such whom I would otherwise never have any clue about.
It's all in what you make it.

  11. Hate campgrounds like that. And I use FB to keep up with my child. Other wise I would never know what he was doing.

  12. Like Bob, drivel is my biggest complaint about Facebook. I guess I have a page, but never go there. Spaces are tight enough here at Raccoon Valley that my neighbor whacked my rig trying to get out this morning. :(

  13. How nice to get back in tough with an old buddy. That is one nice thing about facebook I guess. I'm with Judy though. I have a facebook page but I seldom look at it and when I do all I see there is drivel too. Seems to me our connections with each other are getting more brief and more distant. Or maybe the people who "friend" me on facebook just aren't as interesting as Marti's. :-)

  14. Facebook can be really useful sometimes in hooking up with old school chums. I enjoy keeping in touch with friends from my old hometown, it's all a part of staying connected to friends and family while out on the road. Doesn't work for everyone, but we enjoy it.

  15. Interesting to read about your thoughts on Pirateland. Last week we were in Wilmington, NC staying at the KOA. During one of the raining days we drove to MB to check out Pirate Land and Ocean Lakes. We came to the conclusion better on at Wrightsville Beach and the KOA... LOL
