Quick Update

My eye continues to heal, I have another follow on appointment at the VA Hospital on Friday.  After the last check up, the ophthalmologist was pleased with the progress so far but remains cautious as it can take up to two weeks for the retina to fully reattach.  He told me he used 400 blasts of the laser to repair the tear and described the process as “spot welding”.

So I’ve been careful to follow the restrictions, okay to drive, not okay to jog, do jumping jacks or break dance.  No problem there!  I can read, but limit the amount of time because the back and forth eye movement can stress the repair.

It was good to leave the Shaw AFB campground and return “home” to the COE Volunteer Village on Friday.  Our site was a sight for sore eyes (puns intended).  Even more wonderful was a welcome from Mike and Terri.  :c)

I did have an emergency repair to do in the Journey’s water drain from the sinks.  I’ll do a separate post on that, but for now a quick picture of a broken pipe on the kitchen slide.

I was careful not to move my head in any jerky moves while effecting the repair.

We’ve been keeping busy, though.  Even without being able to read much and suffering an overload from watching home repairs on the DIY channel (another reason to be glad we’re not homeowners), we’ve been out and about.  Some piano lessons for the grandsons,

a trip down to Savannah for Marti to meet her childhood best friend, Sue, whom she hasn’t seen for almost thirty years,

to sewing projects for the granddaughters for Christmas gifts.  Marti is hand making Lalaloopsy Dolls for them, they are the latest “must have” for little girls under the age of ten.  She has four to make,

each will have a different hair color.

How Marti can make these dolls from all these parts is a mystery to me.

I’ll do another post on the doll making, but I’m signing off for now.  Have to rest the eye and don’t want to use up all my day’s reading allowance.  I just want to say how grateful I am for all your thoughts, prayers, comments and emails as I mend.  Thank you so much!

Thanks for visiting and feel free to leave a comment.

  1. Don't be tempted to rush the healing. All will be well soon enough.

  3. I can't wait for the eye to heal so you can again break dance. (film expected to verify the recovery)

  4. SO great to see you in my comments again. Take it slow and easy. Eyes are impossible to replace. Spot welding an eye sounds pretty worrisome to me. I'll sure be glad when I hear you are out of the woods. Bet you will too!

  5. Laser surgery is pretty cool. Amazing that they can repair a torn retina anyway. I bet you will be glad when you can find pins again :-)

  7. Really glad you're healing well, and so happy to have you back "home" where you belong. We missed you guys!

Nice that Marti could catch up with her good friend -- just one of the many perks to this lifestyle -- and will be interested in seeing the progress of her doll making. She's so talented!

  8. Good to hear you are on the mend after such daunting eye surgery. It's amazing what they can do with lasers these days.

I am also in line to see the break dancing!

  13. That spot-welding will probably fix up a few of the loose nuts and bolts in the old noggin' so it doesn't rattle too much when you walk around.

I'm still betting old 'Strom Eyes' could stop a laser right in its tracks.

  14. Breaking dancing? I would like to see a video of that once your eye is 100%

  15. 400 shots of the laser??? Wow....I wined and complained when I had wayyyyy less. Didn't it hurt, or did they put you out? I had two different kinds of lasers...one was as bad as the other. You're the MAN!
