Not Lovin' Holidays

Who'd of thunk it?  During our working lives we lived for holidays, being able to get out of the old salt mine, kick back and relax.  Doing something fun.  The big score was three day holidays when you could really work hard at having fun for extra days.

Now that we're retired, every day is a holiday.  No stress, no work, no more salt mines.  This is a great way to live.  Except when holidays roll around.

Now there's that old saying about best laid plans of men often go astray.  Well, it's really true for us.  Especially when it comes for our mail forwarding.

We get mail from our mail forwarder in South Dakota twice a month, they ship it out on the 15th and 30th of each month to whatever address we desire.  We planned to have our mail shipped to the post office here in Livingston, Texas and timed our travel so we'd be here for the weekend and then pick up our mail on Monday as we head out to our next destination.

Except Monday is a holiday and the post office is closed.  Presidents Day.  So we're here for an extra day and we'll get the mail on Tuesday.  Not that it's a big deal, but this is the second time in our first three months on the road we been hung up by a holiday waiting for our mail.

Now we're going through the calender and circling all the holidays, not to make plans, but to make sure they don't get in our way.

It's a tough life, being retired, but somebody has got to do it.  And we're glad that "somebody" is us!  ;c)

Thanks for visiting and feel free to leave a comment.

  2. You'll find most of us don't do much traveling on holiday week-ends or even week-ends. Just not worth all the hassle. We just have a tendency to forget what day of the week it is.

  3. But dang...every day is a holiday in the life of a fulltimer! It's only mail...:)

  4. Funny how things change when you retire. We try not to go anywhere on week-ends or holidays. That's when we clean or cook or pay bills on line or other "I don't want to do them when I could be hiking or kayaking AFTER all the week-enders are gone" kind of things.

  6. Due to the holiday we got bit also. Our mail was forwarded on the 15th as well. Our problem is we have to leave the park on Monday. We are only going 75 miles so we plan on riding the motorcycle back to get the mail later in the week. Probably on Thursday when the local casino has the seafood buffet! Pesky Holidays!

  7. Terry thinks all holidays should go away. Who needs them anyway? All they do is cause congestion every place we want to go. They fill up the parks, put more cops on the road and slow everything else down too.

  8. Totally agree...but our biggest gripe about the holidays is that for most of them we are not allowed to use our camp discount clubs.

Holidays are for others not for us any longer!

  9. Another vote for not doing anything anywhere close to a holiday.
After awhile, you will find that your mail has little in it of interest. We get ours once a month but NEVER on a certain day. I decide which day and email them. It works well.

  10. So true. I can't count the times we've been planing to move, then said, "Oh, darn, Monday's a holiday." Then the other one of us invariably will ask, "What holiday?"

  11. Being on the road, holidays have been different!
After leaving cold, wet, Seattle on December 1st, we were walking on a sunny beach in California at Christmas, biking around Mission Bay in San Diego for New Years, and practically every day since, has been a holiday in sunny Arizona.
My wife is retired, I am still working, but I love the change in scenery along the way. But I did have to remind my wife that Monday was a real holiday, after nearly 3 months since her last commute, she has finally lost track.

  14. Used to be you'd see these signs about companies being 2001 certified (or whatever year that was) but it had to do with processes for reducing parts failures and manufacturing mistakes....

Maybe you need your own "mail certfication" campaign to prevent showing up at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Personally, I think you're adjusting as well as can be expected after a very organized life. But convincing ones' self of that is never an easy task.

    As you were.....

  20. We eventually managed to move all the important stuff to online and now only have our mail sent when we know where we'll be for a week or so. It's just magazines and junk at this point.
